I recently recieved an order from Newark electronics and was bothered to see that they charged me sales tax, though the order went from SC to NY states. Not only that, but the tax amounted to 10.4% of the order. (8% on the total with an exorbitant shipping charge).
Customer service gave me nothing but a run around and rushed me off the phone when I asked them about this.Is this a valid business practice or just their way of gouging another 10% from people?
I'm assuming you're in New York. Newark maintains two sales offices in New York state and therefore they have to collect New York sales taxes on New York orders. As long as a business maintains a presence in a given state, then they are subject to that state's sales taxes even if their corporate offices or warehouses may be located elsewhere.
So, as far as sales taxes go, that's a valid business practice. Shipping charges are another matter. :)
