Dedicated line using romex 12/3 with red and black for hot. Has anyone else used this?

I went to visit a friend and he wanted me to help him run 2 dedicated lines for his system. The wire he had purchased was Romex 12/3. Unlike the 12/2 this cable is twisted with red,black,white and bare copper. I realized this is for a different application but we used it anyway and chose to use the red and black for the hot, hoping that the two 12 gauge wires would a plus as would the fact that the wires were twisted. The results were quite good and still improving as the wire breaks in. Has anyone else done this? Is there any reason not to?
