Aragon preamp lacks transparency - need suggestions

Hi,

I purchased a used Aragon 28K preamp with the motorized volume control. I'd like to know how I can improve the transparency of the unit. It seems kind of dark and flat. They say it uses a laser trimmed volume pot (Alps maybe?), but I'm wondering if it can be easily replaced with a higher quality version and still maintain the motorized volume function. I've seen a lot of posts about shuntting the pot, but would like to avoid that. What about changing the input selector switch to a higher quality version? Would cap upgrades to "black gate" versions help? I wouldn't have a problem spending a few hunderd to make the improvements.

Thanks.
