horns 'n' domes 'n' Cornwalls

Redwing:

Your question is harder to answer than it seems. Good soft dome tweeters are capable of a delicacy and nuance that can be very enjoyable. Bad metal dome tweeters can be pretty jarring. Domes are well-known for their dispersion, which may or may not be a plus in any given situation (jeez, what a political statement!). Suffice to say I really enjoy the sound of dome tweeters and/or MR's in speakers like AR3's and Polk's early Monitor 5/7/10.

Then there are horns. Don't conclude that horns are incapable of nuance. Also, don't just assume something like a Cornwall is a "rock speaker". Kelly "Mobile Homeless" Holsten says they excel at jazz and acoustic music more than r&r. Good horns are very efficient and low distortion (i.e., very linear). My take on the classic Klipsches is that they only give their best with tube amps (2A3 SET in my case) and with good program. Don't expect an overproduced, over-equalized, and over-compressed/limited pop recording to sound good. Something like an AR3 (dome tweeter and MR) may do a better job of smoothing off the rough edges of, say ABBA's greatest hits on CD (I speak with some experience here).

Does this help any?

all the best,
