Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Hi all.I recently added some spikes to my Polk R40s and noticed a nice improvement. Then I got curious and I decided to check out the insides of the speakers. I found a small piece (10"x5"x1") of poly-batting sitting behind the two 5 1/4" drivers. So I went to the fabric store and purchased about a yard of the same material and a bag poly fill. I cut the batting to to line the sides and back from the top through about two thirds down the speaker. I didn't put any on top yet. I also put the original piece of batting back in where it was. Then I took some of the poly fill and stuffed it under the port at the bottom of the speaker. I put the drivers back in place and sat down for a listen.
To my surprise they sound great. Forgive me if I don't use the correct audio terminology in my description. Everything sounds more detailed, cleaner and clearer. The vocals.. instead of sounding like they are coming from a hallway.. sound like they are in the room. The bass does not seem to be as deep as before but it sounds less boomy.. which I like.
I like what I'm hearing and feel like I bought new (better) speakers but I'm not sure if maybe I did something wrong. Maybe I put too much in? How do I know if I'm missing some detail? Maybe I could do better? I see some people use a thin sheet of batting that sticks to the inside of the speaker. Should I consider using that instead of the 1" thick poly stuff? Is it important to keep the batting from touching the front wall of the speaker? Do I need a piece on top? Should I take out the stuffing at the bottom? Is there a science to it?
I know these are a lot of questions asked but I would appreciate as much feedback as possible. Thanks
Tom
