I'd look into replacing the output coupling caps first because I did this to my Sony NS500V player that I formerly owned and heard an IMMEDIATE improvement in the bass (tighter and punchier). I used Black Gate 6.3V 47uF non-polarized Hi-Q caps. These are thru-hole components and easy to replace on the audio board.

Adding the IEC connector is fine and will allow you to experiment with different power cords in the future, but I still say tweaking the audio output board will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

Try obtaining a service manual for this unit so you can become familiar with the circuit schematics.
