I did the TNT version with the jackets on. Got what seemed to me to be a good quality copper Cat 5e wire at OSH or Home Depot (can't remember which now, since they both carry it in my area). Based on the TNT recommendation I kept the bone white jacket on. Mine was an "indoor/outdoor" rated one with a jacket of different color and possibly material than the usual "riser" rated gray or blue cable.Maybe I lucked out. Jon is usually right on this stuff and he seems to say (from his posts below) that the jacket thing only works on the European wire - you have to make sure it isn't PVC in any case.
Still, I get dramatically better sound out of my jacketed speaker wires and am very satisfied with the sound. Could be I would do even better with the naked version (CVH); maybe try that next time, though it appears to be a little harder on the braiding. Braiding is very easy with jackets on.
On the whole I would definitely recommend trying DIY Cat 5 cables, whichever way you go. Very few DISsatisfied customers on these boards.
