Actually, I did find a difference between the standard spikes on my speakers, and switching to threaded cones (Soler), pointing down (just like spikes). For some reason, the cones sound better (better defined midrange and bass, smoother).The standard spikes on my speakers (Von Schweikert VR4s) went all the way thru the carpeting into the subfloor, so that isn't the differnce. I would not intuitively think that putting the points facing upward would be the way to go, given the explainations usually made for spikes or cones and why they work. YMMV, of course.
