OP amp replacement

Dave -- I just did some mods on my Sony NS900 which I understand has a similar analog stage to the 500. Like the guys below said, the output offset was fine with the stock opamp (a JRC 2114 in mine - it's supposed to be an improved 5532). But I replaced it with a pair of Burr Brown OPA627's mounted on a couple pieces of Sip board from Digi-Key so the pair of 627s goes into the same space as the dual opamp. The offset was even lower and the sound much improved.

Another thing you can try is to supply power all the time to the analog power supply. I also replaced the puny transformer from Sony with something that has more moxie and wired the transformer to the AC so the analog section is powered all the time as long as the player is plugged in ;).
