To repair a broken ground connection should be pretty straight forward. Most likely there is a broken or disconeccted wire at one of the RCA connectors. When you look at the RCA it will be the outer connector. The center connector is the signal.Depending on how the unit is constructed; you may have to trace the ground from RCA to RCA until it connects to ground (chassis). The lesser of the evils is if there is a wire broken right at the RCA.
Overall this is a relatively simple repair. Let your buddy do the soldering for you and enjoy the music.
