Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Had a 15-year-old pair of Polk model 4s, a two-way bookshelf system that went for about $200 a pair when new. Tried 'em out in the bedroom, and really didn't like how they sounded with the Foreplay and Audiosource Amp 2. Thin and harsh. Before I donated 'em to the rummage sale, I tried a) dampening the cabinets with those vinyl sheets Audioexpress sells and 2) wrapping the speaker baskets with Mortite.Well golly, the base tightened up, the shrillness disappeared, and they're darn enjoyable. I can listen to them for hours. Now I'm wondering, gee, should I take a shot at replacing the caps and resistors? I mean, these are not expensive speakers...Worth it? Any good general guidelines for when it is worth investing more money in a given speaker?
