Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
Just to share my notes on garbage that is useful for tweaking. There are lots of good stuff in abandoned computing equipment which now abounds in the street. You know it is 100 times more fun to tweak using free parts and also help save the environment at the same time!
Computers: motherboard and raiser board has good Tantalum capacitors. Many have voltage regulators. Batteries (some are rechargeable). Power supply has high voltage rectifier, X2 rated and Y rated caps, fuses, regulators, fast rectifiers, high grade capacitors of all sorts, Movs, chokes and good high current wires. The cooling fan is handy too ! The power supply box and the IEC power connectors are handy too. There are small to medium heat sinks. Good power switches. Ferrites LEDs and small speakers.
COmputer monitor: medium sized heat sinks, caps of all sorts (esp high grade and high voltage ones, lots of adjustable resistors, transistors, rectifiers, caps. High voltage stuff. Regulatrors, ferrites. LEDs and microswitches
Dot matrix printers: very large capacitros (unless the modern ones uses switching power supplies), recitifiers. LEDs and power switches. Good general purpose transistors (one transistor per pin at the very least plus some heavy regulator ones if it is not switching power supplies).
PABXes are even better if you're luckily enough to get one. the caps insides are very high grade.
Very old TVs have very big heat sinks but not much good stuff save a few RF related good caps. Small TV have more useable caps and medium to small heatsinks. Other usualy stuff like resistors, transistors and diodes...
Do the environment one more favour, separate the metal parts as much as possible and dispose then to recycling bins by material type.
Thanks and have fun!
