It all depends on design of magnet that is on the driver. In most cases it is possible, by using additional magnets, to increase magnetic field. This stronger field will raise efficiancy of the driver, and make it to be a bit louder. But for this to have really good effect you would need to open magnet itself and redesing center part to accomodate additional magnet(s). Just sticking another one at the back will usually have positive results, but very small. Sometimes inaudible, but surelly measurable.
Changes you hear most likely are not placebo. To see that this really works, take some very small speaker with little magnet and then attach big one at the back. In this case change is so big that you can clearly hear driver going much louder.
