distortion in source selector switch?

hi all
every now and then my preamp (a custom G&D unit) will add distortion to my cd source, sometimes taking out one channel. today i got the chance to switch sources on the preamp as one channel was down using CD playback...using an alternate source, both channels were fine, and switching back to my cd source, everything was fine.
questions:
is this likely the preamp's source selector switch? or could it be the source (i.e. my dac) itself (which got corrected by toggling the preamp's selector)?
if its the preamp switch, what recommendations to correct it? progold contact cleaner?
