Mostly what I hear is that it's all about surface area, which doesn't quite make sense to me. If the material absorbs sound waves properly, then why would it be effected by the shape of it? If you ask me, it would seem that if the material has an absorption coefficient of 1, then it really wouldn't matter what shape it is.One reason why they're shaped is found in my Handbook for Sound Engineers...something along the lines of Sonex is shaped to look like acoustic wedges used in anechoic chambers. Maybe it's just aesthetic purposes, which seems to make the most sense.
