XLR's should have been used for unbalanced signals from the start. Early equipment manufacturers used the RCA to reduce costs and we've been paying the price (grin) ever since.One advantage of XLR over RCA for unbalanced connections is you get options with the cable shield. With RCA's one signal pin, you are forced to combine signal return with signal ground. This has several disadvantages.
With an XLR, you have options with the cable shield since each signal wire will get it's own pin. Chassis ground can be connected to the cable shield (in a 3 conductor cable) as intended.
