Re: terminating line level gain???

I once posted that my pre-amp manual states "The line level gain is set at 15 db by the factory. The 15 db gain setting is usually very desirable. However , should you have a cartridge with lower than normal output, a low to moderate gain power amp OR possibly a combination of the two you may wish to increase the line level gain section by 10 db for an overall gain of 25 db. To increase the overall gain simply install a shorting plug into the rear panel jack marked LINE GAIN". I never did try shorting it, but a buddy suggested terminating it!!
Any opinions? TIA,Andy

Don't see why it would need termination. Sounds like they're just using an RCA jack as a simple jumper type switch. Insert a shorting plug and you switch in whatever it's being used to switch. Depending on just what it's switching, terminating it could have some undesirable consequences.

For example, what if it's switching in a resistor to set the gain? If you terminate it instead of just shorting it, you'd be adding the terminating resistance to the resistor that's being switched in.

I'd just short it.
