Roomlens, pipe material?

I will build some roomlens this summer.
Does anybody know what material the original roomlens are made of.
Are they built with PVC pipes like most "DIY-people" seems to use
or are they made of metal like copper or something?
Would it be better to use metal-pipes than PVC?
