Hi Lew,
Seems to me there are two sources of noise here. One is the diode switching and the other is from the transformer's reaction to the charging current spike. This charging spike gets bigger as the filter cap gets bigger. There is no way around this without some kind of current spike limiter. This camn be a resistor, small choke, it depends on what kind of voltage you need from the circuit. The closer the output voltage comes to peak sine wave, the bigger the current spike is going to be.
