Sounds like you are connecting the input voltage wrong

You can't make -5V with a +10 volt input using the LM337. Maybe on your breadboard you reversed the leads of the input to supply -10V so it works right? The capacitor is overheating because of the reversed voltage across it and is a very dangerous situation.
