Crackling, popping noises could be coming from a dirty pot or switch (do you hear noise when you adjust volume, balance, or other controls?), a bad capacitor (look for a leaky electrolytic, especially if the unit is 10-15 years old), RFI or line noise (are you using unshielded interconnects?)... these are the easy things.
