I have been tweaking a Sony NS 700 DVD player with some substantial results. When I opened the lid for the first time, I immediately noticed a 4558 op amp driving the output stage. Out came the solding iron. Also, I noticed that the supplies to the op amp were only locally filtered with .01 uF caps. Taking it a step farther (rivalry from a friend doing the same mods on the same unit was a contributing factor), we decided to design a new board for the output stage, complete with high bandwidth regulators, and a dedicated linear supply, polypropylene caps, better (Holco) feedback resisters, and a better op amp. All electrolytics in the signal path were replaced with polypropylene. The result was great - better depth of the soundstage, more accuracy, better dynamics, clarity and detail. I amost stayed home from work just to listen.
Now I am wonding how to go a bit further. I am considering a replacement for the master clock. I see that the master clock feeds a PLL at 27 MHz (for DVD) and the PLL divides down the clock to 16.xx MHz for CD playback. If I replace the clock will the PLL get in the way of improving the CD clock? Is there another area I should try to improve first?
