If you are going to use the bookshelves at the first reflection
point, try angling them towards the speakers by something between
5 and 10 degrees. This will change the angle of reflection and
reflect most of the bounced signal away from you. The result of
this will be a diffusion of the reflected field and it will make
the side reflections arrive later (after bouncing all over the place
first.) If you do this you don't have to worry so much about
damping the first point; a solution that I'm not totally convinced
is necessary.
