Actually, it's better to have long speaker cables and short ICs.Comparatively speaking, the large signal generated by power amps is seldom affected by the relatively small reactance in long speaker cables, whereas the much smaller signal of line stages (preamps, electronic crossovers, equalizers, etc.) can easily be compromised by ICs, especially if the run is too long or if the unit's output impedance is high. If a line-level run is over 100 feet or so, it's probably better to run balanced anyway.
As for the power drop in speaker cables, it's neglegible unless you have super long runs. Example: with 20' of #12 AWG and an input signal of 2.83V/1W, there will be a voltage drop of approximately 3% -- that's only .25dB difference -- inaudible!
