Re: Black Gates advice

213.109.48.7

In my experience, Black Gates change a hell of a lot in the first 300 hours or so. Sometimes it's a night and day difference, but it is always a significant improvement. Whether the difference can be measured easily without very specialist equipment is another matter.

Out of interest I have used a super e cap combination (two .47uf caps) to decouple the rails of an LM6172 op amp in my pre amp. The first few days were pretty rough, the sound was not just lean, it was almost skeletal, also very tiring to listen to (not that I really wanted to). I nearly changed over to low inductance film caps. But I thought, what the hell, they've always improved in the past so I just left the preamp on day and night for over two weeks. The result? Well I've got the full bodied sound with all the flesh back on the bones that I used to have with the prvious OPA2604 op amp, plus bucket loads of detail that is the strong point of the 6172. But a lot of the quality comes from the caps I'm sure.
