Anyone try to build their own rack?

I'm thinking shelves made of MDF from the local lumber yard (perhaps laminted with Oak or just painted) supported by three 1/2" - 3/4" threaded rods with matching bolts and washers to clamp the shelves, either black oxide or maybe brass sourced from McMaster-Carr or similar. Cheap, easy, and infinately flexible. If this has been done I'd like to hear about it...
