Re: Has anyone else built Sheldon Stokes Tube DAC 3.5b?

The cost can vary depending on the quality of parts you use. If you go to Sheldon Stokes website, and download the free 17 page assembly manual it has a complete parts list, along with the parts numbers and prices from DIGI-KEY catalog. The assembly manual quotes $500 or something like that. That is using a $180 custom toroid power transformer and a $40 low voltage power transformer for the digital side. So, by being a wise shopper you trim costs. I purchased a really nice, anodized aluminum chassis from ANCO for $80.00. They made a custom size, with ventilation slots on top and bottom, stainless steel press nuts, double front panel for strength, the front panel being 1/8" thick aluminum. I used all high end components( I took my time and bought things as I could afford them ) such as all CADDOCK MK-132 resistors, except in the analog stage I used AUDIO NOTE TANTALUM resistors. I used NICHICON MUSE caps, along with BLACK GATE caps and SANYO OS-CONS caps. I used very high quality machined, gold plated DIP sockets. AXON tin foil and film output caps and PPMFX bypass caps everywhere else. ULTRA FAST diodes in power supply with high voltage SILVER MICA caps as snubbers. And too many more to mention here. If you, or anyone else is interested I can provide a list of components I used, as the higher quality audio parts are much larger and many brands won't fit the PCB. I learned a couple things that might be helpful to somone else building this DAC. My cost was about $900.00 Total.
