My goal is to build a speaker that has efficiency around 90 db. I ruled out the Scan-speak 8545 because it has a rated efficiency around 88 db. I've seen some designs using this speaker and the eventual loudspeaker efficiency gets designed down to around 86 db. I recently visited the Wilson audio web site and saw that their Puppy, which uses one of the 8545 per speaker (not MTM), is rated at 93 db. My question is, how can a speaker have a total efficiency greater than one of it's components (without doubling a pair of the inefficient one in parallel). I realize when Wilson or ProAc etc. buy their components, they get customized versions. But I can't see a tweak to a basic design increasing the sensitivity by 5 db. What gives? Thanks in advance.
