I don't know if this is the case in your amp but they are often used as voltage sources because different colors have well defined forward voltage drops in the region of 2VDC without as much noise as zener diodes (provided they are not exposed to light sources). Sometimes they are used as part of a current source or voltage regulator. Or it could be, as you suspected, a test aid for engineers or technicians.Dave
