On only two occasions have I changed a cap on its own, so my answer
applies only to these events.I found an Auricap (signal coupling cap) didn't sound very good at
first but improved a lot in a week to become good. Then the improvement
was slow and steady for a month, becoming rather special.A Black Gate in a power supply was reasonable at first but didn't
improve much over a few weeks. I can almost believe that it got worse
and reached a low point after 4 weeks but this is probably a delusion.
But after about 8 weeks it was fine and seemed to reach its peak after
about 10 weeks.A recently built DIY valve power amp has improved considerably over
about 6 weeks. I'd guess it's mainly the caps that are running in but
have no way of knowing. So this consensus of one :-) is that caps do run in; the change is
quite substantial; and it's a highly non-linear process wrt time.
