North of the equator you crimp

"top/bottom". South of the equator you crimp side/side. This keeps the audio correctly phased. Seriously though, assuming the lug is round and the wire is round, I don't see where it would make any difference. I have never done a crimp side/side. Seems most natural to crimp top/bottom. But then, I live north of the equator...
