I want to experiment with loading in the John Curl moving coil board in my Audilbe Illusons Modulus 3. The board is loaded by the factory at 47K ohms, but there are slots for resistors to change the loading. My Dynavector 20XL has a factory recomended loading of 30K. Now, I'm happy with the sound at 47K, but I'm curious as to what it would sound like loaded closer to 30K. The Aud. Illusions manual recomends metal films resistors, 1/4 to 1/2 watt at 1% tolerance. I've received two wildly different load choices from folks here (I'm no math genius, have no idea how to figure out resistive loading), 100K and 30.1 K. Before I order some fancy pants resistors from Northcreek or Michael Percy, I want to experiment with cheapy Rat Shack stuff (hey, what if I don't like any loading save for the Audible Illusions 47K). Rat Shack only has non-metal resistors (are they ceramic?) at 5% tolerance (100K and 33K ohm) for a buck a pack. I know they are not audiophile grade, but might give me the idea of how loading will affect the sound of the cartridge. Since they are not metal film resistors, could damage be done to the system, or is it just a case of sound quality? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.
