Question about DIY Room Lens

I have been reading as much as possible about these DIY room lens, but need some clarification on a couple of things that I did not find in the archives.

1. As I understand it the bottom of the tube openings need to be covered with a fine mesh material such as panty hose or similar. I assume one could just glue/paste it to the unseen bottom as a sheet rather than wrapping around the tube, or did I miss something?

2. With a vented or leaky opening in the bottom like this I fail to understand how they even work, compared to conventional helmholtz resonators. What exactly is the reason or purpose for this leaky bottom?

3. The spacing according to Jon Risch should be different from the right side compared to the left, and only by 1/8" which is not very much. Again I fail to understand why the two sides should be any different, not to mention why the top spacing should be wider than the bottom, given the small amount of difference. What difference could the spacing from top to bottom of 1/8" possibly make?

Thanks a bunch for any help and insight here.
