Use whatever's easiest for you. Oh sure, you can overkill with lead or kryptonite damping, vibrapods, and bullet-proof kevlar. But the simple fact of the matter is, solid wood, MDF, plexiglass, or anything else that's aesthetically pleasing to you will work fine. The main reason I use an external crossover is for ease of modification.
