It could be that the "softening" you hear is actually a reduction in RF spikes from the rectifiers. I find FRED's to be the closest thing to a tube rectifier in sound quality. I haven't heard any major difference between IXYS, Harris, IR. When I get rid of RF in my system it loses its "aggressive" quality. Give your ears some time to adjust.Mike
