Hi Peter,
You may want to read the post linked below before buying upgraded balls.
I cannot say that I have heard them, but I can defiantly say that I won't be wasting my money on a degree of perfection that would take laboratory equipment to detect.I have some custom machined bearings that are similar in concept to the Barry's Hip Joints, i.e. larger diameter aircraft aluminum cupped base with a larger, shallower bowl. The top unit is countersunk with a flat bottom to the countersink. They use steel balls. There is no special polishing, only very clean machine work.
To make a long story short, they work great under my CD player. I am now using them in conjunction with an inner tube and will be playing around with the order of the stack in the future. I didn't like them under my speakers, but YMMV.
Some of the DIY designs are using a cupped surface on the top and bottom which I have not tried but that method doesn't make sense to me because it would have the effect of reducing the diameter of the cup by 1/2 and doubling the slope, both of which are contrary to what I was trying to achieve.
Be sure to read the post about the difference in bearing grades.
Gene
