Based on my own experience, I'd suggest not using the weller gun with a circuit board. Partly, I find that a simple iron, held like a pen is less awkward, especially in tight places. The Weller is ok for home repairs but for a circuit board is kind of a blunt instrument. Also it seems to transfer heat more slowly so you have to put heat to the board longer. You are less likely to damage a component by applying higher heat but for a very short time.De-soldering a dead component is a good exercise before messing with with something you value. Hang on to at least the transformer, bridge rectifier, heat sinks, and the case. These are to most valuable salvage items.
