Re: NAD 310 Tweaking

I have an NADL40 (it uses an 310 as an amplifier section) which I have tweak extensively. The largest benefit I have heard in it is substituting either an AD823 or LM1364 for the TL072 opamp in the input section. Also, replacing the two servos (JRC4556)with OPA2132 made an audible improvement in the amp.

Other modifications:
1) Replaced all ceramic capacitors in the amplifier section with polypropylene film capacitors. (I have a more limited budget and simply substituted 50V Panasonic capacitors from Digikey)

2) For the very small value ceramic capacitors, I substituted silver mica.

3) Replaced all 10uF electrolytics with ELNA cerafine

4) Replaced all other electrolytics except the 4700uF caps with Panasonic FC series.

5) Added polypropylene bypass caps under the board for all the large value electrolytics.

I made all of these modifications without the benefit of a service manual, so I was hesitant to change any of the capacitor values.

IC sockets were installed for all opamp substitutions. I'm currently using the LM1364, and not the AD823.

By far, the greatest change in the sound of this amp comes from the OPAMP substitutions I mentioned. The change is not subtle and a very welcome improvement. The second greatest change in sound comes from the replacement of the ceramic caps. This second change seems to reduce the audible distortion in the amp greatly. Swapping the larger value capacitors in the amp seemed to make the sound smoother and more liquid.

I am interested in adjusting the bias for this amp per the TNT-audio web site, but lack the appropriate specifications to do so. Where did you get your copy of the NAD service manual and how much did it cost? I would be very interested in obtaining a copy of the manual. Would it be possible for me to obtain a copy from you? I would be very interested in discussing modifications of this amp and comparing notes on modifications. Please feel free to e-mail me.
