I think that a lot of that "excitement" and "drive" people hear in their systems pre-damping is distortion induced.I have had very good results using industrial floor tile (available at Home Depot for about 50 cents a tile-this is a very cheap tweak and the biggest bang for buck that I have ever experienced in my system) to damp both CD player and integrated amp. I used heavy duty carpet tape inside the CD player, but it would not hold within the amp due to heat. There I ended up using a foam acrylic tape (automotive application) that was pretty expensive that a friend gave to me, but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives.
