Dear Steve,It is essential to flush-mount drivers, as this reduces diffraction (most critical at high frequencies).
An easy way of getting the same acoustic results (although not so nice visually) is to place a ring of felt around the driver's edge (so that it would continue like a straight baffle).
I find that it looks best when the felt is stretched across the whole width of the baffle (rectangular piece of felt with a round cutout for the driver).
