I remember talking to a guy who did super-amp mods for the Phase Linear Amps, Heathkits, Dynaco's, etc. and one of his most successful mods was providing a power op-amp buffer for the VU meter's. He changed the scaling resistors, and let the power op-amp drive the meter off of a feed from the amp output.The other method was to ......
disconnect the VU meter!Yes, they can affect the sound, such non-linear loading on the output is not gong to be a good thing.
The first watt and below is what we hear MOST, and this is where those nasty diodes do their worst.
