A less than totally quiet background, residual "hum" or buzzing, a touch of grittyness, harshness, slight reduction of the soundstage, less precise instrument placement, etc.Each item in and of itself may manifest singly, or ALL of them, yet all to just a slight degree. Make the right connections, and it can be a noticable improvement in overall clarity and a "darker" background.
All of this is predicated on a system that will allow for these things to be noticed readily.
