1. Should the common wire between the two input wires on the primary side be connected to AC ground?
No but, the idea is to have 120V Live and Neutral. The Neutral does get connected to ground at the mains breaker pannel though.2. Should the elecrostatic sheild on both transformers be connected to AC ground?
Yes.3. Should the common wire between the two output wires on the secondary side be connected to ground?
No, instead of line and Neutral there will be 60V and 60V. Common noise on the secondary will be cancelled due to the balanced output.4. If a component (say a CD player) has a two prong plug with no ground connection, would balanced AC power prove futile?
No, you will get full benifit ground plug or not. see 3.5. What does one do with components with no ground pin in the plug?
Do not plug any lamp fixtures, they will work but you can get a 60V shock when replacing the lamp. Plug only devices where the neutral is not connected to the chasis(CSA and UL should take care of this). If a defect causes the Neutral(60V) to touch the chasis it may pose a danger. The safest is to use a only grounded devices with no chance of someone plugging any other device.
