Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
I'm not a "tweaker" but of late have been interested to find if some of the things audio lovers swear by actually prove sonic benefits. So I've been playing with Eichman RCA connects, different silver cables PS Audio Ultimate Outlet and I'll soon have some nice marble bases coming in for my speakers/amps/ pre and cd player.
I am of the belief that many times people convince themselves that they can hear a difference...virtually thinking of sorts. and lots of times any (or if any)sinic difference occurs it is so faint that it's tough to digest if the tweak made things better, worse or no difference at all.Anyway on with the latest experiment. About 5 weeks ago my new Rogue gear was delivered (120 Mag, 99 Mag) and I love them (I'm not here to sing their praises). I did, howver, have one slight sonic drwaback in that there was a nice audible buzz coming from both channels, the right channel more then the left, and most evident in the tweeters (slightly in the mids). The louder channel buzz was audible from about 12 inches, the other you had to put your ear against the speaker but it was clearly audible.
I ordered some vibrapods --initially based on the fact that I am destoying my landlords beautiful wood floors with my speaker placement experiments. I wound up buying a bunch of the pods cause they are not expensive and I figured they would not hurt.
I tried them under my speakers and I actually lost a bit of the snap in the bass. A side note, these floors are not suspended and apartments here in Hong Kong are concrete, so the flooring is quite rigid. I point this out because while the current (stock) spikes might not be ideal, they do not have the problems most encounter with spikes on suspended wooden floors--and in the end IMM (in my mind) the spikes sounded better then the pods. But I will be trying another pod combo in about a week, where I place marble on the floor, then the pod, then the speaker.
Anyway, I then put 4 #2 pods under my cd player and stacked (2 per stack in each of the 4 corners) of #3's under my 2 amps (which sit directly on the floor). I could not necessarily notice and diference in sound staging or clarity (my system to me is quite clear as it was but I also have not spent that much time checking it out as I had to leave to catch a flight--DAMM).....but to my delight the audilbe buzz from both channels was gone...completely. It's funny because I've been on the phone with Rogue a few times and we've been trying to figure out what was causing the buzz....the tubes, the fuses, the transformer in the pre. The pods cured it. Nice when you KNOW something works as opposed to just convincing yourself it does.
