Well the resolution between positions is entirely determined by the resistor values you use, not the number of positions.
As for how many positions, it depends who's making the switches. Shallco's open frame switches have a maximum of 48 positions, for either one pole or two pole decks.
Also, I'd already had some EMail correspondence with Joe and knew he wasn't wanting a lot of positions so I probably should have made that more clear in my reply.
Or if you want to get messy, four decks, one pole per deck. This works well for the radial type rotaries, but it would be a mess with an open frame rotary like the Shallcos and others.

By messy I meant the much more circuitous route you'd have to take wiring between decks of an open frame switch like these:
Versus the more radially-oriented switches such as these:
Perhaps "inelegant" would have been a better choice of words.
