Try using the single core cable which is used for domestic wall cavity electrical wiring. You should be able to get 12 feet of this from any hardware store for a few dollars.
Banana plugs or spade connectors reduce the chances of the ends of the wires breaking after repeated stress but other than that do nothing useful.
