Re: Stabilised power supply for power amp ????

HI Wim

quite controversial - as you know your regulator will have a fairly constant output vs. frequency Z while the unregulated case has frequency dependent Z-out with more possibility (in theory) of stage interaction (despends on de-couplers & they may add some sort of phase shift?)

I suspect both the regulator and passive approach may have identifiable signatures - not sure if it could be shown with double-blind test. I'll hazard to guess that physically large electrolytic caps impose some "sound" as does the topology of the active regulator.

did you use an error amp in this regulator or an emitter follower with voltage reference? - from what little I know, some error amp regulators may behave different/worse than those without any global negative feedback.

also - I'm not convinced that active regulation always brings "better" sound - it may be source/case/listener/speaker dependent - some pentode tube amps have simple RC decoupler's feeding their screen supply so the whole loadline goes "sliding" as both plate and screen suppply voltages sag - funny thing - I've heard it sound 'OK' and the regulated screen case (with TIP 50) no better - perhaps less efficient speakers would have given favor to the regulator?

whats your thoughts on all this stuff? - is there a 'best approach'? - how did you execute the power amp and feedback scheme?

Best!
Freddy
