Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I've been working on some elementary upgrades to some equipment, and thought that I would share some observations. They're what I've seen / heard, and your milage will probably vary...Faster op-amps for Proceed PDP-1 (the original Proceed DAC!). An initial upgrade of clock and o/p buffer to AD711 was not quite enough, and I tried Elantec's AD847 replacement, the EL2044. It took significant work to clean up supply so that it remained stable (GBW 60MHz, SR 325 V/uS), but the final result is less grainy treble, tighter bass and much better "air" / reverb (to my ears).
I also tried the AD817, but one channel became unstable. The Elantec seems quite stable in comparison. The AD847 is too expensive to try out...
Overall I'm very pleased with the results. I thought that this might be an interesting addition to the list of candidate op-amps for tweakers. The EL2244 (dual) seems like a possible alternative to the LM6172, LT1364, etc.
Cheers,
Mervin
