A carpet will reduce the room's reverb time for the upper frequencies (only) and will make the room anything from perfect to slightly dull (lacking in sparkle).A hardwood floor will increase the RT at high frequencies and will make the room anything from perfect to too bright.
Given that its very easy to add damping and thereby reduce HF RT but nigh on impossible to restore HF in an overdamped room, the best solution IMO would be a HW floor with area rugs plus a few tasteful wall acoustic treatments to balance the room to perfection if required.
