I'm familiar with the Flexy and while I haven't built one, I do know an inmate who has built several now and I think they work fine for the price. It's a reasonably good, flexible, simple design and I would think it's hard to better it at the price. You asked about hollow uprights for filling and I attempted to answer that. As I said, the Flexy has solid legs and duplicating it with hollow legs isn't going to be anywhere near as simple or as cheap. It probably won't be as flexible either. You can do things with hollow legs (I know because I did) but they will probably end up being totally different designs to teh Flexy as mine was. I included the link to my rack as an example of something built around hollow sections which are filled for damping. You're probably going to have to use your imagination and I tossed out a few ideas as starters. It can take time, though, to work things through. It took me weeks of thinking to finally get my design together - probably close to 2 months after I started to think about it - so don't be afraid to put some time into it if you want to stick with hollow legs. There have to be a number of options out there that I didn't come up with and the odds are that at least one of them is better than my suggestion for attempting to produce a Flexy clone with hollow legs.
The biggest problem with the Flexy is in the rigidity of the rack. The uprights are probably rigid enough but MDF shelves aren't particularly rigid and they are all that join the uprights. Not only do you have to worry about the shelves flexing but that action will also move the uprights in relation to each other. If you can come up with a very rigid shelf, the rack would be considerably improved but rigid shelves definitely won't come as cheap as MDF or doors as Dan Wright suggested. The problem will be compounded if you're trying to have shelves that are both light and rigid - most ways of increasing the rigidity of MDF to cope with the weight of the gear you mentioned are based on increasing thickness of materials and that increases the weight proportionately.
Don't get me wrong, I think you can do a Flexy that will meet your needs and there are suggestions for other shelf materials at the TNT site.
So, do you want a Flexy or something with hollow legs for filling? It needn't be an "either/or" decision but a Flexy with hollow legs definitely won't be as simple.
